Hannah is a vocalist and a player of things with strings and frets. The two traditions that she has focused on most deeply are the old-time music of Appalachia and kroncong, a style of string-band music from Indonesia. Hannah has been studying clawhammer banjo with Elkins, West Virginia native Ben Townesend for several years and has also worked with Ellen Gozion of the Early Mays on a project focusing on Southwest PA ballads. In addition to her work as a musician, Hannah teaches guitar, volunteers with organizations such as Girls Rock! Pittsburgh, and is working on a PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh. She is passionate about using music as a form of placemaking and community-building.
