OneBeat 11–Buried Knowledge examined the connections between place and memory and invited fellows to use music as a tool to unearth, revive and celebrate hidden or suppressed histories, traditions, and cultures. OneBeat 11 fellows created original music that reveals buried knowledge, inspires deeper connection to diverse cultural heritage, and stronger appreciation for forgotten wisdom. Fellows worked with renowned musicians, and cultural leaders including Lonnie Holley, Carlton Turner, and Matthew Evan Taylor.

Our 4th Edition of the OneBeat Virtual Residency invited 25 artists from around the world to explore the relationship between assembling and assembly. How do we meaningfully unite people in both virtual and physical spaces? What are the challenges and opportunities inherent in each? How can we embrace the ancient, in-person assembly while utilizing new ways of connecting through virtual means?

OneBeat Virtual #3 embraced a stream of questions based on online participation, trust, virtual communication, and shared values to explore the boundaries of what an online community of artists can be. The gap of glitches, the unheard muted echoes, and the feedback loops locked up in lines of 1’s and 0’s inspired us to reimagine virtual soundscapes, social interaction and the mystical language of machines.

Nestled in the quietude of the beautiful grounds and buildings of this artist residency, Fellows were free to explore 2019's theme - Sonic Imaginaries. The pioneering musician and researcher Pauline Oliveros describes our preference for visual articulations of our imagination as the priority of the visual over aural, which rules much of contemporary culture.

In the second edition of Scores for Uncertain Times, 35 musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds and musical traditions came together to take score of their experiences over the initial year of the pandemic. Through meeting, working and collaborating online, they created new modes of healing, collective care and community in unusual times.

In an unprecedented moment for all, OneBeat Virtual #1: Scores for Uncertain Times proposes music as a curative practice, as an improvised path of intentional care. Can we use our unique practices to examine listening as a practice of care? What could we leave behind in a post-pandemic world? What has this moment of global “pause” given us that we could take into the future? Can we reimagine the reciprocity of touch through the making, traveling, and receiving of sound?
