Anthony Dembede Mido, aka Checkmate Mido, is a Kenyan MC, singer, percussionist and beatboxer from Nairobi. Through his blend of rap, poetry, beatboxing, and music, he skillfully tells stories in English, Swahili, and Sheng. Anthony has gained substantial experience performing in several festivals in Kenya and internationally, as well as sharing the stage with names such as Akua Naru and the Grammy-winning act The Soil. He has recently been awarded a Pop Kultur Nachwuch’s Goethe Talents 2023 scholarship, and was nominated in the Best Live Act category in the Sondeka East Africa Awards 2023. Also an educator, Anthony is currently working on the Beatbox Africa project, a beatbox-centered platform focused on strengthening the community of beatboxers from all across Kenya.
