2012 and 2013 Fellows Muthoni Drummer Queen and Blinky Bill were featured in a new editorial piece by Bandcamp titled The New Sound of Electronic Music in East Africa. The piece traces some of Kenya’s current music trends back to the country’s recording boom that immediately followed its independence from British rule, and highlights the work of a select number of electronic musicians driving the “new wave of East African electronic music, indigenous rhythms, 808 drums, synthesizers, traditional African instruments, and field recordings,” who “combine to create auditory paths to liberation”. Furthermore, the piece praises Muthoni and Blinky’s musical styles, which honor East African musical traditions while incorporating new influences like electronic music and modern Hip-hop.
