Algerian composer and singer-songwriter Boubakeur ‘Bouba’ Machar is a Tuareg nomad who grew up in the desert, near the town of Djanet. Close to his culture and to music, Bouba is the lead vocalist and guitarist of the group DERAN, who are currently working on a new album. Bouba has collaborated with OneBeat Sahara Co-Director Chakib Bouzidi, as well as Sadek Democratoz and Roberto Luti (Playing for Change). He is devoted to keeping his cultural traditions alive by singing in Tamasheq, a dying language, as well as exploring Tindi music – a tradition exclusively sung by women that is slowly dying out due to modernisation — influenced by his mother and sisters, who are Tindi singers.
