OneBeat Sahara Mixtape and Films

We’re pleased to release the OneBeat Sahara Mixtape! Blending hip hop, gnawa, Maghreb electronica, soul, desert rock and more over eight tracks, the  was written and recorded during the three week North African residency and tour program this past spring based Taghit and Algiers. Bringing together 23 genre-bending artists from Algeria, Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, Libya, Niger, Tunisia and the United States, and led by Co-Artistic Directors Chakib Bouzidi, Domenica Fossati and Haile Supreme, OneBeat Sahara encouraged musicians to “collaboratively create original work and to explore black diasporic musical traditions that traveled from Africa to the Americas, and back to Africa again”. Listen to the album streaming via Soundcloud below.

We also recently released several short videos from our program in Algieria directed by filmmaker Lamia Lazrak. These include a memorial to OneBeat Co-Artistic Director Chakib Bouzidi, a portrait of our residency in the small desert town of Taghit, a behind the scenes of the Sampling Sahara band featuring artists from the U.S., Libya and Algeria, and a behind the scenes with tuareg guitarist Bouba.
