2015 Fellow Jay Afrisando presented his new sound installation, ‘Gendhing Cosmic’, at the 2019 Linux Audio Conference at Stanford University. The work, which was played through 56 speakers and 8 subwoofers, was electronically generated using SuperCollider, the open platform for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition.
‘Gendhing Cosmic’ reimagines how pakem- the principal guidelines derived and practiced in Javanese gamelan musical tradition- are ripped from traditional instruments, thereby scattering their original identity and creating a new one.
The piece was originally exhibited at the 2018 Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival and the 2018 West Bank Arts Quarter Festival in Minneapolis.
