Ruan player Neil Chua created and performed the collaborative concert “Memoirs. De Melodies 吟遊”, a project inspired by his time at OneBeat and supported by the U.S. Embassy of Singapore and the High Commission Of Malaysia, Singapore. “Memoirs. De Melodies吟遊” brought together multiple cultures and instruments via three highly accomplished instrumentalists, Neil Chua ( Ruan 阮), Tang Xiao Feng ( Pipa 琵琶 ) and Liu Le ( Gu zheng 古筝 ), as well as a performance by fellow OneBeat alumni from Indonesia, Peni Candrarini.
Over 450 audience members engaged with the musicians as they shared the history and evolution of their respective instruments. Audience members even experienced the spontaneous, live composition of an original work, a recording of which is posted online for wider audiences (see here).
Neil is also working on an upcoming project – “Sesaji Segoro” (Daughter of the Ocean): a full musical opera based on an original piece composed during his OneBeat residency in collaboration with Peni Candrarini. It will be performed at the Setouchi Triennale this month. Details below:
