Veeru Shan is a distinguished percussionist and artistic activist from Karachi, Pakistan. Trained in eastern classical tabla at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Pakistan, Veeru has broadened her musical expertise through diverse global experiences. She received scholarships to study Korean traditional drums at the National Theater of Korea and world music at The Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin.
Veeru’s journey as a percussionist has led her to prominent platforms. She has been a session musician for musical series like Nescafé Basement and Pepsi Battle of the Bands. Her groundbreaking role as the first female instrumentalist in the house band of Coke Studio marked a significant milestone in her career, showcasing her talent and breaking barriers in Pakistan’s music scene.
In 2019 she created the Funkari Initiative, inspired by her travel enthusiasm and passion for music education. The Funkari Initiative aims to make art accessible by offering music workshops across Pakistan, specifically focusing on bridging cultural and social gaps by empowering women and facilitating self-expression.
Veeru also serves on the advisory board of Drum Summit USA, an organization of leading female percussionists, educators, and facilitators committed to encouraging and empowering females in drumming. Her collaborations have been extensive and impactful, including performances with renowned Pakistani musician Arooj Aftab and contributions to the Nisa residency, which focuses on the representation of Muslim women in music.
