Muneyi

Composer, Producer, Singer-Songwriter

Johannesburg, South Africa

Hailing from evergreen rural Venda, Muneyi is a multifaceted Tshivenda artist, songwriter, composer, and guitarist. Muneyi’s music is inspired by the grandmother who raised him, his community upbringing, a love for language, vulnerability, human behavior, and personal experiences and connects the listener to his own narrative of Tshivenda folktales and modern sounds. Muneyi was born in 1995 in Tshilapfene, a small village outside of Thohoyandou, South Africa. His love of language first manifested itself in elementary school through debate, public speaking, spelling bees, and grammar lessons. Upon finishing school, he picked up the guitar for the first time and found a home to express his own narrative in the indigenous language of Tshivenda. In 2019, Muneyi was the winner of the Afropunk Battle of the Bands, which led to the release of his debut album Makhulu. He has shared stages with some of South Africa’s most celebrated young artists including Sho Madjozi, Msaki, Zoë Modiga, The Muffinz, Nduduzo Makhathini, and Nonku Phiri, to name a few. Muneyi is passionate about the preservation of his indigenous language, and is focused on building a community of artists that support one another and allows for the growth and development of a new movement of folk artists in South Africa.
