Johanna Amaya Conejo

Johanna Amaya Conejo is a percussionist and experimental composer from Bogotá, Colombia. A highly creative and skilled performer with a unique compositional sense, Johanna has written for a number of local ensembles including Yaku, an ensemble exploring traditional Andean music through a modern lens, and Bogotá Colectivo de Compositores. She received a 2020 OneBeat Accelerator Grant for her project, Todas las Puertas, an ensemble and alliance of interdisciplinary and socially engaged artists from Colombia, Brazil, and the United States. Throughout her career, Johanna has been part of initiatives that use social strategies around music to benefit vulnerable populations in Colombia, including educational projects with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra and “La Casa del Arte” a project of the municipality of Cota, Cundinamarca. Awarded with a Fulbright scholarship in 2020, Johanna is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Percussion Performance at Ohio University. She continues to focus her artistic work on exploring the timbral possibilities of percussion and developing a unique sound that expresses her identity and consolidates a sonority enriched by layers and textures.
