Zia Ul Karim is a multi-instrumentalist (violin, xhighini, rubab), educator, producer, and composer from the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Dedicated to preserving the music of Gilgit-Baltistan, he educates and trains young people in addition to performing, researching, and archiving indigenous folk music. He is a strong advocate for the music education of girls in a region where playing musical instruments or singing by girls has not been acceptable for the majority of people. Zia is now in the process of launching an online institute dedicated to musical innovation based on the music of the Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral regions, and works with Aga Khan Culture Service, Pakistan where he leads Leif Larsen Music Centre Altit Hunza as music educator.
