Daniela Serna is a Bogotá-based composer, percussionist and sound artist. As both a performer and educator, she has worked in traditional Colombian cumbia, porro, fandgo and currulao music styles, as well as global rock and pop. She is the founder of two active ensembles: Aguasalá, an all-female Caribbean folk band and La Mera Arrabalera, a sextet fusing tropical raspa music with latin jazz and merengue. She recently presented “Bullerengue Covers,” a sound installation exploring the sonics of tambour alegre (hand drum) and surrounding space. In 2012, Daniela won a Señal Radio Colombia contest to perform with legendary folk-singer Petrona Martínez. She is a member of the band LADAMA, along with three other OneBeat 2014 alumni. In 2020, Daniela launched the Totona Power Podcast—a feminist space for conversation and reflection, focused on the stories of Afro-Colombian and Palenque female-identifying musicians in Colombia, funded with the help of a OneBeat Accelerator grant.
