This trio came together during our residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts to create this powerful song. Filmed in the 9th ward neighborhood of New Orleans, MC Ricardo Nigaglioni (Luss), Kamerum el Akademico, and harpist Jennifer Ellis join a group of residents, young and old, to share a moment of music and reflection.

This September, OneBeat, the world’s foremost residency celebrating music as social practice, returns for its fifth year, convening innovative musicians from every region of the world to the U.S. for one exhilarating month of performances, discussions, interactive music-making events, and more. OneBeat grew out of a notion that musical collaboration is a uniquely powerful way to connect people across political and cultural barriers, which can in turn cultivate an international network of sonic change-makers who make a powerful impact on their local and global communities. This year OneBeat focuses on Musical Migrations, exploring how large movements of people have shaped music, and conversely, how music can encourage dialogue, community resilience, and rootedness in situations of displacement and upheaval. Istanbul Portrait: Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu
Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu is a cellist and composer from Istanbul, Turkey who is currently researching Turkish Taksim music at Istanbul Technical University. “I started when i was actually very very young, because in our house my father is a musician. I’m now making my master thesis in the music theory and composition department. I’m writing a thesis about Turkish maqam music. [This] was the first time that i experienced the street studio, and in my neighborhood, actually, in kadikoy. it was also so nice to be there.From sulukule, the young rappers were with us also. They are very very good. And their thoughts, and their anger about urban regeneration…we all live this situation but some people live it so hard.
