Istanbul Portrait: Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu

Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu is a cellist and composer from Istanbul, Turkey who is currently researching Turkish Taksim music at Istanbul Technical University.

“I started when i was actually very very young, because in our house my father is a musician. I’m now making my master thesis in the music theory and composition department. I’m writing a thesis about Turkish maqam music.

[This] was the first time that i experienced the street studio, and in my neighborhood, actually, in kadikoy. it was also so nice to be there. From sulukule, the young rappers were with us also. They are very very good. And their thoughts, and their anger about urban regeneration…we all live this situation but some people live it so hard.

I would love to record sounds from different places around Istanbul where urban regeneration happened or is going to happen, because there are many, many historical places. I would love to invite musicians, like sulukule, from different places. And maybe it could be like an exhibition, [with] the sound, and you [can] experience a building before it’s destroyed, maybe record the sounds of the building and try to experience the places, the history.”
